Space is an "Element of Art" that can be either the area around an object or the distance between objects in a work of art.

Elements of Art: Introduction

The "Elements of Art" are the building blocks that artists use to create their artwork.  The elements of art include color, form, line, shape, space, texture, value, and sometimes text.
