Elements of Art: Space

"Stool, Vase, and Palette", Georges Braque, 1939

"The space between the dish and the pitcher, that I paint also." ~ Georges Braque

Space is an "Element of Art" that can be either the area around an object or the distance between objects in a work of art.

Space can be either positive or negative.  Negative space is empty - nothing is there in the
artwork.  Often negative space is the color of the paper (white space), but not always.  Positive space is where the space is full - objects, buildings, people, shapes & etc.  Positive space is usually added to the blank paper (black space or colored space).
The black space is positive and the white space is negative.
Sometimes space is meant to depict distance in a work of art.
